This week at EXTERNA, we had the honor of visiting the facilities of Sulayr Recycling PET Trays S.L., a pioneering company in Europe in the recycling of thermoformed PET packaging, to carry out the periodic approval audit as a RETRAY Recycler, in accordance with the certification scheme requirements of the Plastic Sense Foundation and the UNE EN 15343 standard.
Sulayr Recycling PET Trays S.L. has established itself as a benchmark in the circular economy thanks to its patented technology, unique in the world, which enables tray-to-tray recycling of both monolayer and multilayer PET trays. Their process begins with a delamination stage that removes adhesives and separates polyolefin layers, allowing all types of trays to be recycled within a single material stream.
Through this system, Sulayr transforms post-consumer and industrial waste into rPET flakes, ready to be reintroduced as recycled raw material in new packaging. This approach not only reduces dependence on virgin raw materials but also promotes a more sustainable and responsible production model.
The RETRAY certification aims to consolidate a circular economy model within the value chain of thermoformed PET packaging. To achieve this, it verifies key aspects such as:
- Traceability of the recycled PET used in the processes.
- Quantification of recycled content, in accordance with the UNE EN 15343 standard.
- Recyclability of the manufactured products.
- Transparency and compliance with European recycling standards.

As an added value to this visit, we were joined by José Queipo, General Manager of the Ecosense Foundation, with whom we had the pleasure of sharing his time, knowledge, and proactive mindset.
